A gynecologist offers specialized treatment for women and there can be many important reasons to go see a gynecologist. During a gynecological examination the female reproductive systems (vagina, uterus and ovaries) are studied or treated for potentially dangerous conditions such as cancer or infertility.
There are a few things to look for and worth considering when scheduling a gynecologist appointment for the first time. Gender may be an issue when it comes to choosing a gynecologist. Many women choose a female doctor because it makes them feel more comfortable. However, the women that do choose a male gynecologist often experience a gentler treatment since he has not tried the examination on his own body and is therefore extra careful.
Whether you choose a male or female gynecologist it is always important to remind yourself that the gynecologists are professional medical practitioners. Also bear in mind that the doctor is used to examine lower bodies daily and it is not a cause for embarrassment to visit a gynecologist with your issues.
Whether you are seeing a gynecologist because of acute issues or in connection with a regular check-up, the gynecologist will always ask you if you are registering symptoms previously unnoticed. Given your answer one of our gynecologist in Copenhagen will be able to quicker assess what might be the cause for discomfort.
During the examination you will be asked to remove the clothes from the lower parts of your body and lie down on the bedside. If you are having trouble being exposed, wearing a long blouse might help. If for example you are due for a pap smear test at the gynecologist, where the need is not acute, we recommend making an appointment that does not coincide with your period.
A gynecological examination can be split up in three minor phases:
When our gynecologist in Copenhagen has examined the cervix he often chooses to do a so-called ‘pap smear’ or ‘pap test’. The pap smear will reveal cell transformations that represent potential precursors to cervix cancer.
After the inspection the gynecologist removes the cervix holder instrument and begins the exploration of the internal reproductive system.
During this phase the doctor inserts two fingers inside the vagina whilst the other hand is placed on the bottom part of the patient's belly. The gynecologist feels behind the cervix and the uterus itself, allowing further mapping of shape, size and movement.
Your ovaries will also be subjected to examination and in this case, it is possible to determine if cysts or tumors exist. If you as a patient at any point in time during the consultation experience discomfort or pain it is important that you inform the gynecologist. This will be noted in order to make sure we are extra careful the next time you visit us.
If you consult our gynecologist in Copenhagen as part of a post cervical cancer control for example, the gynecologist will try to ensure that the disease has not returned.
Please note if you have had your reproductive organs removed, the doctor will be able to see the top of the vagina.
