A gynecological examination can be split up in three minor phases:

• Inspection where the gynecologist examines the reproductive organs, the labia, the vagina and the cervix. • Exploration where the gynecologist feels the internal organs; the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tube and the pelvic floor muscles.

A gynecologist can also use ultra sound to check for abdomen fluid concentrations. Here the doctor places a head ultra sound inside the vagina sometimes supplemented with ultra sound on the external part of the belly.

Pap smear

When our gynecologist in Copenhagen has examined the cervix he often chooses to do a so-called ‘pap smear’ or ‘pap test’. The pap smear will reveal cell transformations that represent potential precursors to cervix cancer.

After the inspection the gynecologist removes the cervix holder instrument and begins the exploration of the internal reproductive system.

During this phase the doctor inserts two fingers inside the vagina whilst the other hand is placed on the bottom part of the patient's belly. The gynecologist feels behind the cervix and the uterus itself, allowing further mapping of shape, size and movement.

Your ovaries will also be subjected to examination and in this case, it is possible to determine if cysts or tumors exist. If you as a patient at any point in time during the consultation experience discomfort or pain it is important that you inform the gynecologist.
